Comic City - Millennium Forum

The ComicCity Festival launches this September, in partnership with CultureTECH, the Millennium Forum and the Nerve Centre, celebrating Comics, Illustration and the Creative Arts.

The festival will be held in the Millennium Forum venue in Derry/Londonderry over two days, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September and showcase some of the world’s best creative talent, including some of the comic industry’s top writers and artists. These special guests, exhibitors and dealers will be in attendance throughout the weekend and there will also be a full programme of talks and workshops.

Invasion Derry - Millennium Forum

INVASION comes  to the North West.  Ireland’s premier Star Wars costuming club, The Emerald Garrison, will be Invading Derry for the first time with Invasion Derry. It includes a line-up of talks, and fun interactive activities as well as the Emerald Garrison’s hugely popular props and replicas. Visitors of all ages will love meeting and posing with over 40 costumed characters including legions of Storm Troopers, Jedi Knights, Bounty Hunters, Clone Troopers, Darth Vader, Wookies and many, many more!

Fans have the opportunity to meet actors from the original movies during Lecture Theatre talks and signings. Please note that the actors charge a fee for photographs and autographs.

Young visitors will once again have the opportunity to experience Force Training with the Emerald Garrison’s Jedi instructors.

This is also a great opportunity to pick up that collectible or toy you’ve been looking for at one of our traders stands on the ground floor.

Ministry of Science Live! - Millennium Forum

Keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times – Ministry of Science Live is returning to the Millennium after wowing audiences at last year’s festi- val. This is not your ordinary science show – it comes with

a hovercraft, a few cannons, lots of bangs and a push bike that powers a blender. Look-

ing at the inventors and the engineers who have shaped the modern world we live in. From liquid nitrogen flowers to hydrogen bottle rockets; Buzz Aldrin to Virgin Galactic; Cat food tins to the hovercraft; and discovering Methane to the in- vention of the Battery. Expect Loud Bangs!

Minecraft Education Day - Schools

In March CultureTECH announced that we’d be providing MinecraftEDU (the version of the game for schools) free to all post-primary schools in Northern Ireland – all 214 of them. Since then we’ve got them all set-up and ready to go – with the potential to reach as many as 50,000 young people annually.

On Tues, Sep 15th over 50 schools from across the region will come together for a day of Minecraft workshops, classes and events to launch the new school year and help us unveil a whole bunch of new resources.

The day is being promoted in partnership with our media partners, The Belfast Telegraph.

A Day of Extraordinary Design - The Playhouse

As part of Irish Design 2015, the Northern Ireland Design Alliance will host a one-day design bootcamp with The Extraordinaires® Design Studio Pro* and NWRC design students.  This will be an interactive day of creative problem solving focusing on user-centred design inspiring creative, unique output. Could you design a remote control for an Evil Genius?  Students will work in teams and compete in different design challenges across the day.  We would also love to get more experienced designers involved with each student team.  This will give you an opportunity to share some of your experience and reinvigorate your own design practices with some fresh approaches.

Using Projection in Live Theatre - NWRC, Foyle Theatre, Strand Rd

3D projection design and map- ping has become a standard el- ement in modern theatre. It is a creative field of stagecraft which involves the design and integra- tion of moving and static images into a stage production. This 2-day workshop will allow par- ticipants to understand how to map a theatre space in 3 dimensions, create designs, integrate them into the production and then project these during a live performance.

The production will be Reservoir Dogs LIVE, performed with an all-female principal cast, and is a reprise of the show which ran to great critical acclaim in the Foyle Theatre in June of this year.

WONDERQUEST Live! - In Schools

WONDERQUEST is a new YouTube channel home to original family-friendly educational content. The channel was created by Joseph Garrett, better known to millions of fans as Stampy Cat, and Maker Studios, the global leader in short-form online video, in collaboration with YouTube Kids.

CultureTECH are delighted to work with the WONDERQUEST team to bring the series into the classroom, alongside exciting hands-on science experiments and activities inspired by the show.

An interactive and productive session aimed at arts and cultural organisations who want to exploit the opportunities offered by technology – but aren’t sure where to start.

Hear examples of how culture and tech have combined to develop audiences and generate income. Meet people from the arts and tech sector and form new ideas and potential partnerships.

Techies In Residence Bootcamp - The Playhouse

The Techies in Residence programme is an initiative of the Building Change Trust, in turn funded by the Big Lottery Fund and managed by CultureTECH. Digital Technology holds huge potential to help the charity and community sector to develop new solutions to social problems.

This bootcamp kicks off the residencies, and over the course of the two days, we’re bringing together the best minds in social innovation, technology and experts and members of the VCSE sector in Northern Ireland for a series of workshops and the organisations that are at the heart of the Techies in Residence programme will outline and explore the problems they face.

If you’re interested in seeing how technological and digital innovation can help your organisation overcome challenges, and also see the potential impact this programme can have on the VCSE sector in Northern Ireland, this event is open to members of the public.

CREATE:2015 - The Playhouse

Create:2015 is a Generation Innovation event on Thursday September 17 2015, inspiring the next generation of local thinkers, makers, and doers.

As an event initiated and led by 6 young people from across Northern Ireland, our aim is to get people excited about the creative economy and the possibilities within. Create:2015 will do this in two ways: one is through notable people telling their stories of how they got involved with the creative economy and the other is through workshops allowing people to gain hands­on experience of just some of the jobs available in this sector.

BBC Make It Digital Marquee - Guildhall Square

Make it Digital is the BBC’s big education project for 2015. The project aims to get everyone talking about digital creativity, to inspire a new generation for a digital future and to shine a light on the innovative work of entrepreneurs and industry.

BBC Northern Ireland is bringing Make It Digital to Guildhall Square as part of CultureTECH 2015.  Suitable for all ages, this free event offers a whole host of fun and interactive digital activities – get ready for robots, virtual reality, gaming and broadcast technology!

  • Join us in the Make it Digital marquee and get up close and personal with Mechatrons’ AL1X, a cyber-life form left on earth by a passing spaceship!

DOJOCON - The Playhouse

DojoCon is the annual gathering of mentors and champions from across the global CoderDojo community. This year’s event will take place at CultureTECH, and is being produced in partnership with the Nerve Centre and co-hosted by the Derry and Moville dojos. With the theme of “the creative coder” we’re welcoming speakers from the BBC, Microsoft, and Maker Studios – alongside mentors from dojos in 6 countries sharing their experiences and ideas.

Tickets to DojoCon are free and are open to anyone who is either involved in a Dojo or with an interest in getting involved – or even setting up their own.

Formula DerrE - Ebrington Square

Over the last few months, primary school children from across the region have been building their very own Goblin racecars – gearing up for Formula DerrE at Ebrington Square, were they will race

in front of the Clock Tower against the clock for the inaugural title of… Champion IET Goblin North West!

The Goblin cars were designed and built by the primary school pupils as part of a creative engineering education initiative. The event will be a fun packed family day with plenty of activities and entertainment for racers of all ages!

Roboparty - Building 80/81, Ebrington

The NWRC have taken part in an EU Erasmus project and transfer of best practise HE institution, the university of Minho Portugal. This activity will include Computing and Engineering staff through participation in a RoboParty activity, using robotics and programming, critical skills needs that have been identified by industry.

This activity will involve participants being involved building the robots, developing the software code to operate the intelligent robots and taking part in robotics races.
