Out There, Thataway - CCA Derry-Londonderry

Stephen Brandes, Nathan Coley, Aleana Egan, Fergus Feehily, Kevin Gaffney, Rana Hamadeh, Merlin James

Curated by: Francis Halsall, Declan Long, and CCA

Out There, Thataway has two conceptual starting points: first, a concern with imagining or navigating territories that are ‘beyond knowledge’; and second, an interest in ways that metaphors of geography shape our thinking and behaviour. The exhibition includes artworks that refer to terrains that are traversed through strategies of fiction and historical association (Stephen Brandes, Kevin Gaffney, Rana Hamadeh); works that imply hesitancy or potentiality regarding location and direction (Merlin James, Fergus Feehily); and others that suggest spaces that are beyond the horizons of our geography altogether (Aleana Egan, Nathan Coley)

Image: Kevin Gaffney, selected still from Our Stranded Friends in Distant Lands. Duration: 5mins 37sec, Korean with English subtitles, 2015.

Prints and Princesses - The Playhouse

An exhibition by Adrian Newton

Adrian studied Fine Art and a PGCE in Art and Design at John Moore's University, Liverpool. He moved to Derry in 2002 ( a woman, now his wife!) He works as a substitute teacher and part time picture framer.
Adrian started making woodcuts about two years ago, he enjoys the process, firstly drawing, then carving, then the anticipation and surprise when pulling the first print. He loves the aesthetic qualities, the different styles achieved through endless possibilities of line and mark-making.
His subject matter is very simple, based on the question, 'what makes him happy?' His three young daughters feature heavily in his work, their innocence, naiveity, playfulness and vulnerability provide constant inspiration. He love carving blocks, he loves his children, it's the perfect combination for him to make art.
Exhibition launch Tuesday 20th October at 6pm. All are welcome.
