REVIEW: Robocobra Quartet @ Tinney's Bar
Take a jar, throw in some of The Pixies, a little tiny pinch of Jim Morrison, a huge helping of Jazz, stick the lid on tight and give it one hell of a shake… that’s my interpretation of the musical recipe for the Robocobra Quartet.
The Belfast based band has a sound that makes you sit up and take notice. The barked lyrics reverberating around the room above the saxophone, a funky baseline that runs in tangent with a jazz drum, then BOOM, exploding into a wall of sound that grabs you by the collar and takes you on a musical journey.
Playing Tinney’s Bar as support act to Best Boy Grip, the audience were treated to band who have been grabbing the attention of Tom Robinson of BBC Radio 6. Vocalist and drummer Chris Ryan is hypnotic and explosive, combining storytelling and drum while at the same time creating a rawness to the band's sound.
Having had released their EP titled ‘Bomber’ in April of this year (and available to download via bandcamp.com), Robocobra Quartet have a busy few months ahead with various festivals on the cards. First up this month is the Swell Festival in Donegal which takes place from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th July and you can also catch them at Stendhal next month. Come September, the guys will be rubbing shoulders with Blur, Florence and the Machine and the Manics to name but a few, at Electric Picnic.
